A surprise decision, fundraising and Bezos

Hey folks, back with another solopreneur blog update – let’s jump in:

My last week in business

It’s been a bit of a weird week – one of those weeks that makes you take a mental step-back to think about your business and how to move it forward.

The main reason?

We’ve been pushing Visto, my immigration tech company, forward to continue to drive b2c and b2b revenue in hopes of a fundraise in Q3 of this year. After having a call or two with trusted advisors, it’s become clear that we might be ready to take that step now.

It was a bit of a jolt as we were kind of getting into “cruise control” mode, ie. just focused on doing what we’re doing in hopes of scaling. To be honest, that didn’t sit right with me over the last week or two but I couldn’t put a finger on why I felt a bit “off”.

So when one of our advisors told us we likely have what it takes to pull the trigger on a fundraise now, I had a bit of an “aha” moment and it made sense.

Next move? Read onwards….

What I’m thinking about

Fundraising.

If you’ve done it before, you know why it’s on my mind.

If you’ve never done it before, I’d say it is definitely an interesting experience. There are many forms of it, but fundraising in the tech world means convincing investors to give your company money because they think it will be worth 5-10+ times what they give you, in the future.

As you can imagine, this takes some preparation, mainly in the form of a deck, which needs to be convincing enough to get smart people on a call with you. From there, it’s a combination of having good (enough) numbers, a good team and a good vision/story.

We’re still not 100% sure we’re going to do it right away, but leaning towards a “yes”. Will keep you posted next week…

What I’m Reading

In the middle of reading “The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon”. After decades of reading fiction, fantasy, business, personal development… you name it – I think my favorite kind of books are biographies or autobiographies of entrepreneurs.

Shouldn’t be a huge surprise due to my passions, but I’m just endlessly fascinated by hearing the stories of incredible entrepreneurs like Bezos, Jobs, Musk, Knight, etc. etc.

About 1/2 way through and loving every minute, will likely be finished and give a full review next week.

That’s it for me, have a great week and keep grinding.
